چکیده

Skin diseases are very frequent in children. Most of them, including the most common disorders, such as atopic dermatitis, hemangiomas, nevi, acne, or bacterial and viral infections, are readily diagnosed through an adequate anamnesis and clinical examination. However, some skin tumors and inflammatory disorders may require a biopsy. The patient’s age and relevant clinical history, in addition to the site from which the skin biopsy was obtained, should be known by the pathologist. A sound basis of pediatric dermatological epidemiology is necessary, since the entities most frequently observed in children differ significantly from those seen in adults. The specimens and biopsies most frequently sent for histopathological analysis in children are melanocytic nevi, inflammatory dermatoses such as Henoch– Schönlein purpura, psoriasis, pityriasis lichenoides, pityriasis rosea, lichen planus, pityriasis rubra pilaris, erythema multiforme, atopic dermatitis, granuloma annulare, and pigmented purpuric dermatosis, as well as infections, vascular anomalies and benign tumors/hamartomas/cysts. Genodermatosis and malignancies are rarely seen. In this chapter, we will be dealing with the histopathology features of the most commonly biopsied skin diseases in children.

The Increased Expression of Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 Messenger RNA in the Non-lesional Skin of Patients with Large Plaque Psoriasis Vulgaris.

BACKGROUND A difference of the interleukin-18 (IL-18) mRNA expression among several proinflammatory genes was previously observed between large plaque (LP) psoriasis patients (more than 5 cm lesions are typical) and small plaque (SP) psoriasis patients (1~2 cm lesions are typical). Therefore, it is necessary to test whether there is any difference in the expression of the genes that activate IL...

Long-term topical oestrogen treatment of sun-exposed facial skin in post-menopausal women does not improve facial wrinkles or skin elasticity, but induces matrix metalloproteinase-1 expression.

It is controversial whether treatment with oestrogen stimulates collagen production or accumulation in sun-exposed skin. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of long-term treatment with topical oestrogen on photoaged facial skin, with regard to wrinkle severity, and expression of procollagen and matrix metalloproteinase-1 enzyme. Two groups of 40 post-menopausal women applied eithe...

Ultraviolet Light B-Mediated Inhibition of Skin Catalase Activity Promotes Gr-1+CD11b+ Myeloid Cell Expansion

Skin cancer incidence and mortality are higher in men compared with women, but the causes of this sex discrepancy remain largely unknown. UV light exposure induces cutaneous inflammation and neutralizes cutaneous antioxidants. Gr-1(+)CD11b(+) myeloid cells are heterogeneous bone marrow-derived cells that promote inflammation-associated carcinogenesis. Reduced activity of catalase, an antioxidan...

Development of ichthyosiform skin compensates for defective permeability barrier function in mice lacking transglutaminase 1.

Transglutaminase 1 (TGase 1) is one of the genes implicated in autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis. Skin from TGase 1(-/-) mice, which die as neonates, lacks the normal insoluble cornified envelope and has impaired barrier function. Characterization of in situ dye permeability and transepidermal water loss revealed defects in the development of the skin permeability barrier in TGase 1(-/-...

Comparison of an antimicrobial adhesive drape and povidone-iodine preoperative skin preparation in dogs.

The antimicrobial efficacy of an adhesive drape applied after a 1-minute alcohol scrub was compared to a povidone-iodine (PI) skin preparation technique in dogs. Each technique was applied to both sides of 15 adult anesthetized dogs on premeasured, clipped areas of skin. Skin bacteria were quantified before, immediately after, and 1 hour after skin preparation. Predominant skin bacteria were is...

Anticarcinogenic effect of quercetin by inhibition of insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 signaling in mouse skin cancer

It has been shown that dysregulation of IGF-1 signaling is associated with tumor incidence and progression, whereas blockade of the signaling can effectively inhibit carcinogenesis. Although several mechanisms of anticancer activity of quercetin were proposed, molecular targets of quercetin have not been identified yet. Hence, we assessed the effect of quercetin on IGF-1 signaling inhibition in...
